Objectives of the Course
In this course, it is aimed that our students learn about biopolymers and their use in industrial areas. Information about bio-based polymers (proteins, polysaccharides), microorganism origin polymers (xanthan, pullulan, bacterial nanocellulose, polyhydroxyalkanoate), polylactic acid polyesters and finally bio-based melanin polymers will be shared.
Name of Lecturer(s)
Doç. Dr. Sinan BAYRAM
Learning Outcomes
1Understanding of polymer and biopolymer concepts.
2Classification of plant-based, animal-based and microorganism-based polymers.
3Xanthan, pullulan and polyhydroxy alkanoate polymers.
4Chitin, chitosan, gum, alginate, pectin, cellulose-derived polymers and starch-derived polymers.
5Polylactic acids and melanins.
Mode of Delivery
Normal Education
Prerequisites and co-requisities
No prerequisites.
Recommended Optional Programme Components
The student's preparation for the lesson by reading the necessary literature review and research articles on the topics will increase the efficiency of the lesson.
Course Contents
Biopolymers extracted from biomass: Proteins, plant proteins (Zein, wheat gluten, soy proteins, etc.), animal proteins (casein, collagen, gelatin), Polysaccharides (starch and starch derivatives, cellulose and cellulose derivatives, chitin, chitosan, gums, alginate and pectin) Lipids (Beeswax, carnauba wax, free fatty acids) polymers of microorganism origin (xanthan, pullulan, bacterial nanocellulose, polyhydroxyalkanoate), Lactic acid products produced from bio-origin monomers, polylactic acids. It is aimed to give information about the types of eumelanin (Eumelanin, pheomelanin, allomelanin, neuromelanin, pyomelanin) and the use of all these biopolymers in industrial areas.
