Religion and Globalization
The issue of religion and globalization is also related to the issue of religion and social change. In the relationship between religion and social change; The change of society has effects on religion. In this sense, secularism, secularism, and the globalization of modernism have had an impact on religion and religious life. The relationship between religion and globalization can be considered in two dimensions.
1-) The Effects of Globalization on Religion: With globalization, religion has been taken out of the public sphere and has been described as a matter of individual conscience. The intensive use of mass communication technologies and labor migration to these countries to meet the labor shortage of industrialized societies have led to religious pluralism. Another issue that has emerged in connection with the demilitarization of religion is the new religious movements.
2-) Religion in a Globalizing World: Religion has a globalizing structure because it appeals to all humanity without discrimination of language and color. Religion manifests itself with different characteristics in the new situation in proportion to the spread of globalization by eroding the borders of the nation-state. Nation-state citizenship is transforming into world citizenship in proportion to the spread of globalization. Religion is redefining democratic practices with the creation of a global civil society and world citizenship. We can ask what kind of contributions religion will have in the face of globalizing world problems or what opportunities it will contain:
Sensitivity to Deprivation: Religion draws attention to the point of showing sensitivity to the problems of the oppressed, especially in the lowest social strata, which will be socio-economic.
Echo of Civilization: Religious revolutionary language and desires have deep roots in popular culture. This makes religion a hope even in the most hopeless times.
Spirit of Solidarity: Religion is more unifying. It gives importance to solidarity and brotherhood among people. Therefore, religious consciousness has a unifying feature.
Belief and Faith: Belief in the transformative abilities of an idea. Beliefs have the feature that determines and transforms the human mentality and perspective in the first place.
Identity: Religion reconstructs identity existentially. It does not establish a temporary and limited identity. This ensures the encompassing of people and society. |
