Objectives of the Course
To help/orient the student to comprehend the significance of organized political activity in democratic societies and to relate it to a democratic citizenship consciousness/awareness by informing them about the emergence, ideologies, organizations, functions and functioning of political parties, that is, the political organizations that have a very important place in the contemporary political process.

Course Contents
Introduction: The concept of “political party” (Pol. P.) and its historical development. Theories on the historical origins of Pol. P.s: The institutional theories; crisis theories; modernization theories; social cleavages and Pol. P.s. Parties as ideological organizations: Liberal and Radical p.s; Conservative p.s; Christian Democrat p.s; Socialist and Social Democrat p.s; Communist p.s; Agrarian p.s; Regional and Ethnic p.s; Right wing extremist p.s; the Ecology movements and p.s. The legal framework (Law of Pol. P.s and its current issues). Party organizations and party membership: The emergence of organized mass p.s; supporters, members and activists. Social composition of Pol. P.s. Parties and interest groups. Basic units of Pol. P.s. Leadership, party organs, party bureaucracy, constituency organizations and parliamentary party group. Factions, tendencies and sectarianism and internal democracy in Pol.P.s. Financial resources of Pol. P.s. Basic functions of Pol.P.s. Party Systems and a typology of party systems. Electoral systems and party systems. Elections and parties/party alliances. Relations with mass media. Social composition of voters and their party preferences. Volatility and realignment of mass electorates. Government formation. Parties in government: Single-party governments; coalition governments and minority governments. Participation crisis and the weakening of Pol. P.s thesis. What could be said about the dynamics and the direction of change?
