Objectives of the Course
The main objective of the course is to introduce the history of health psychology, its basic concepts such as health/illness/well-being and the main study areas of this discipline, and to review the basic propositions of the theoretical perspectives that contribute to the development of the health psychology discipline. In the light of this information, within the framework of the biopsychosocial model, applications for preventive and well-being-enhancing intervention-education programs in the basic areas of health psychology such as protecting and maintaining health and increasing the quality of life will be discussed together with case examples in the context of different subjects and chronic diseases.

Learning Outcomes
1Summarize the fundamental working domains of health psychology.
2Define the principle terms of health psychology, differentiate the effects of these terms on individuals' healthy and ill behaviors.
3Classify the principle theories on this domain and can compare these theories in terms of their objectives and fundamental hypothesis.
4Make predictions about which applications in the field of health and disease will work and which will be dysfunctional.
5By gaining basic awareness of how individuals with diseases or risky health behaviors will be handled by a health psychologist within the framework of a multidisciplinary approach, they can make scientifically based judgments.

Course Contents
Definition of psychology, history of psychology, fields of psychology (social psychology, clinical psychology, educational psychology etc.), theories of psychology (behavioral theories, cognitive theories, existential theory, etc.), biological foundations of psychology, intelligence and theories, sensation and perception, memory, personality and theories, abnormal behaviors, motivation, excitement, defense mechanisms, relationship with other helping professions, different theoretical approaches in understanding the individual in terms of behavior, thought and emotion. Interaction of heredity and environment in individual differences, personality disorders.
