Objectives of the Course
It examines the production and consumption decisions of economic units formed by households, firms and governments in the face of limited resources. There are three basic principles of economics. The first principle is that individuals always strive to choose the best, the second principle is that economic systems tend to be in balance, and the third principle is that empiricism or analysis is based on evidence. The course aims to make students understand these three basic principles and the logic of economic thought. Students taking the course will have knowledge about the basic concepts and problems of economics, demand and supply, perfect competition market, monopoly market, oligopoly market, consumption theory, production theory, money, banks and banking issues.

Course Contents
Definition and scope of economics, economic units and resources of the economy. Three basic principles and scope of economics. Basic concepts of economics: Need, goods and services, benefit, economic value, scarcity, production, production factors, consumption, savings, investment, division of labor, opportunity cost, effectiveness, efficiency and profitability. Main problems of economy: Scarcity, economics and solution to the problem of scarcity. Basic problems in economies. Demand analysis: Law of demand and factors affecting demand, flexibilities and usage areas. Supply analysis: Supply law, supply function, elasticities and usage areas. Market types and price formation: Demand, supply and market balance under perfect competition, monopoly and imperfect competition conditions. Consumer and producer theory: Consumer balance, producer balance and cost analysis. Short and long term production models: Short term production and costs, long term production and costs. Firm equilibrium: Revenue, cost and profit functions, money and banks, economic problems, profit maximization.
