Objectives of the Course
Explain the importance of reading and writing, the purpose of teaching reading and writing, the importance of teaching first reading and writing, the elements that affect teaching first reading and writing. Explain the basic concepts and principles about teaching first reading and writing. Explain the development features of 1st grade students and the teacher attitudes suitable to these features. Explain reading and writing teaching approaches, the methods and techniques teaching first reading and writing and their positive or negative qualities . Explain the content related to teaching first reading and writing of Turkish Course Teaching Curriculum (1st-8th grades) of Ministry of Education. Explain the features of voice based sentence method, positive and negative implications, precautions to be taken against negative implications. Design teaching plans for each step of voice based sentence method. Evaluate the course books related to first reading and writing.

Course Contents
Reading and its importance, listening, speaking, visual reading and visual presentation; reading, writing, learning areas and their relationship, the properties of Turkish and its effect on initial reading and writing teaching; reading and writing instructional approaches, the aims and principles of first reading and writing teaching, basic characteristics of first grade teachers and students in terms of initial reading and writing teaching; initial read and write-ready (student) and preparation (teacher), failure and reasons for teaching and writing in first reading, tools and equipment used in primary reading and writing teaching (properties of cars, selection, creation and use); methods used in primary reading and writing teaching (definitions, characteristics, classifications, applications, superiorities and limitations of methods); sound based sentence method (definition, principles, properties, stages and application), reading and writing instruction in accordance with the stages of sound based sentence method, developing vocabulary, evaluation of first reading and writing, teaching of first reading and teaching of technology.
